More to Love

couture bridal seamstress + dressmaker

hi! I'm Courtney

Hello, Roux!

My seamstress business has become so much more than me offering alterations, so I felt it deserved a name all it’s own that reflected that. And I chose a name that felt reflected my roots, the atmosphere I wanted and the full service experience I offer to brides: Roux Bridal.

my roux roots

Roux, pronounced like roo or rue, has ties to my childhood nickname “Roo.” My family began to use this name for me because while I am a whopping 5’3″ now I was far more petite as a kid, and they felt the character from Winnie the Pooh was an appropriate reference. And though subtle, I loved the idea of my business’s name having familial roots. Especially as a third-generation sewist and seamstress who was first taught how to sew from her mother and grandmother.

roux bridal’s couture vibes

Having a degree in Studio Art means I sew and work in a way that isn’t simply utilitarian in nature. Sewing is a tool I use to create art in motion (fashion), and I wanted to use a French word to elevate the name alongside the work. Couture fashion can be found in many places, but it goes without saying the heart of haute couture is French. After all, it is regulated by law according to the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode in Paris, France. And though I won’t ever be official haute couture, working and creating designs and lines with a large staff, I do strive for perfection in sewing and custom dressmaking at a couture level.

So using the French word that mimicked my childhood nickname felt perfectly suited. And truthfully, I love that Roux Bridal allows me to create that connection, without explicitly using the term “couture” or “atelier.” (Interestingly enough, the word roux in french refers a russet brown, rust red color and primarily used to refer to said haircolor. And yes, I have been a redhead for over a decade.)

Roux Bridal: perfectly simple

Pairing Roux with Bridal made the name feel perfectly complete. I am a bridal seamstress and it only makes sense to refer to the essence and core of my business.

I hope that you love Roux Bridal in name as much as I do, as well as in practice. Growing this business is a joy everyday that is indescribably gratifying to me. Getting to use my art and craft to serve others is just about the biggest blessing I could ever hope to receive. (Trust me – it’s intensely hard for us artists to find a practical way do what we love.) And the cherry on top is working with other women and making them feel beautiful, during one of the happiest celebrations and moments in their lives. It is an honor I will always cherish. 🤍
