It’s going to be a minute before I can get to NYC to see the ‘Women Dressing Women’ Exhibit at Costume Institute of the Met — because yes I definitely hope to — so for now I will just reminisce on the ‘Dior: Designer of Dreams‘ couture fashion exhibit I went to at the Brooklyn Museum of Art in the fall of 2021.
It was beautiful. Such an incredible collection, exhibit design, and space. Initially, I was surprised it wasn’t going to be at the Met, but I quickly realized the Brooklyn Museum of Art isn’t to be scoffed at. It’s a great Museum with beautiful architecture and it allowed for so much more space than the Costume Institute at the Met has.
As a couture seamstress I have a special respect and reverence for true haute couture fashion, specifically Dior. And this exhibit couldn’t have been more thorough.
It featured everything you could dream of seeing and all at once; original designs and sketches, photography, miniatures, toiles (draft garments), art, and countless incredible garments. I couldn’t have been more in my happy place and the final, largest gallery space was like a fairytale. Massive ceilings with gowns hung all the way to the top; dreamy projections of glitter, clouds and floating flowers; and even music to set the mood. I’d never seen anything quite like it. I took my time and did my absolute best to take it all in and absorb every bit of it.
I’ve finally upgraded my phone since then, but hopefully you can still enjoy some of my favorite snapshots. Fingers crossed, I’ll see you soon, NYC.
Curious about my couture work? Take a look!
